There are many denture creams (adhesives) that contain zinc. There have been recent reports linking excessive use of denture creams that contain zinc with neurological and hematological problems. In the studies performed to date, it appears patients with loosely fitting dentures that relied heavily on adhesives (two or more tubes per week) were affected. The prevailing theory is that the excess denture cream was being eaten, and that resulted in increased zinc concentrations in the blood.
It is very important for denture wearers to continue with regular dental office check-ups. At these check-up appointments the fit and function of the denture is evaluated, ensuring proper use and avoiding any possible damage to gums and underlying bone.
