There was an interesting interview on NPR today. Dr. Peter J. Weiss, MD discussed his new book “More Health, Less Care.” The premise involves the vicious cycle that has plagued modern medicine with treating conditions rather than focusing on teaching prevention.
“I became much more interested in what I could do to help individuals change their life to improve their health and avoid illness in the first place.” – Dr. Weiss
This statement resonates with me because that has largely been our practice philosophy. We utilize our regular checkups and hygiene appointments to keep patients up-to-date on the most current preventative measures. I often say, “Everyone is much happier when you’re in a hygiene chair for a thorough cleaning, then in my chair in need of repair.” Regular checkups also allow us to notice changes in tissue, salivary flow and composition, and tooth wear early so that we can provide more interceptive treatment options.
