Showing our support for breast cancer awareness!

October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is dedicated to raising awareness and educating individuals about breast cancer throughout the year.

October is also designated as National Dental Hygiene Month. Dr. Mitesh Jivan would like to take a moment and reflect upon our dental hygienist’s success and daily contributions to our office, patients, and community. All dental hygienists come together to teach and talk about the importance of great oral hygiene and focusing on advising patients on simple habits for a health smile.

Breast Cancer and Oral Health:

About 1 in 8 women in the US will develop breast cancer. About 1/3 of people being treated for breast cancer develop complications that affect the mouth. Studies show that women who have gum disease or missing teeth are 11 times more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, but the oral health implications don’t stop with just a diagnosis. Many women who undergo treatment for breast cancer experience side effects impacting their mouth. It is very important to visit your dentist before starting any cancer treatments. Your dentist will consult with you regarding regular maintenance for a health smile.

Steps to avoid risk of gum disease:

  • The most simple solution is to maintain a regular oral health routine
  • Brush twice daily
  • Floss daily
  • Keep up with your bi-annual visits with your hygienist and dentist.

It is difficult to guarantee a cancer-free life, but knowing your risks and taking steps to reduce them can make an impact on your chance of being diagnosed. Dr. Mitesh Jivan and staff show support by donations along with helping out and spreading the word about healthier smiles by practicing good oral hygiene and about breast cancer.

Please feel free to share your story if you have experienced the oral health side effects of breast cancer. Share your experience:
