Cleaning and Prevention

The best preventative program is a cooperative effort by the entire dental team.

The best preventative program is a cooperative effort by the entire dental team. The goal is to preserve natural teeth and prevent onset, progress, and recurrence of dental diseases. Preventative dental medicine starts at home with good oral hygiene and diet, and continues with the efforts of your dental team.

Brushing and Flossing Technique

Brush teeth at least two times a day (morning and before bed). Use a small soft bristled toothbrush with soft, round-ended bristles. It is best to replace toothbrushes at least every 3 months. We support the use of electric toothbrushes that have the American Dental Association’s seal of approval.

Flossing between teeth should be performed on a daily basis. Flossing removes plaque that a toothbrush cannot reach, and stimulates the gums and limits the depth of gum pocketing.

Dental Exams and Professional Cleaning

Dental exams are a critical part to properly evaluate oral health. This is accomplished by taking dental x-rays (to detect decay, tumors, bone loss, and cysts), examination of soft tissues (oral cancer screening, gum disease evaluation), and examination of hard tissues (existing fillings, tooth decay).

A professional dental cleaning in our office is performed by highly skilled Registered Dental Hygienists. Ultrasonic and hand instruments are utilized to comfortably remove accumulated deposits of plaque, tartar, and calculus. Teeth are then polished to smooth surfaces to slow plaque and tartar formation.

Fluoride Varnish

Fluoride is a molecule that helps teeth resist decay by strengthening the enamel. Fluoride varnishes are applied to the tooth surface and provide a safe dose of fluoride directly where it is needed.

Sealants

Tooth decay often starts in hard to clean deep grooves and depressions present on the tooth form. Sealants close these deep grooves and depressions preventing food and bacteria from trapping there.
